TurboPre-Flight Checklist

Carl is recording from near Sky Manor Airport in Pittstown, NJ where he watched balloons taking off this evening. Sean is out this week but everyone else is here and ready to go!

Cruise Flight

Victoria visited Iceland, where she got to see about 75% of the country. She said General Aviation is well represented and very healthy there. You can check out pictures at her blog.

Also Victoria will be at the AOPA Homecoming Saturday 10/4 at the Frederick Municipal Airport booth 21 (Aviation Insurance Resources) from 9-4. Turbo The Flying Dog will also be there. You can also come to hanger E-7 11-2 for a free cookout!

For tonight's main topic, Carl reads an email from a listener about mitigating safety problems in General Aviation. The group discussed various safety issues, different types of aircraft and the mitigating circumstances. Victoria also discussed some of the issues related to different planes and insurance rates, and the whole group discussed seat restraints and how they use them. 30% of GA deaths are a result of head injuries which could possibly be prevented by using restraints.

Rick brought up the recent crash of a TBM900 near Jamaica due to possible hypoxia and depressurization. Carl went over some of the warning signs of depressurization and how to protect yourself in the event of a loss in cabin pressure. Carl also went over the CARE checklist, which is Consequences, Alternatives, Reality, and External Pressures.

Well I am sure there are many days like these flying as a mission pilot in the bush but there are also many challenges. Pre-Flight Checklist

The Plymouth Air Show is Saturday, September 27th in Plymouth, Massachusetts 10-3 at the Plymouth Airport. The featured attraction is an acrobatics show with Mike Goulian. The event is free and Rick will be there.

The Stuart Air Show in Stuart, Florida is November 1st & 2nd, with a special night show and Halloween festivities October 31st. Stuck Mic AVCast will be reporting live from the show.

August 23rd was the grand opening of Aerospace Discovery at the Florida Air Museum, located in Lakeland Florida, home of  Sun n' Fun. This new exhibit is designed to be more interactive with simulators and hands on activities.

Carl kicks things off by bringing up a proposed rule regarding non-aeronautical uses of airport hangers. The comment period is open until September 5th. Airports that accept federal money, public or private, can only be used for aeronautical usage. Many airports are allowing people to store things like boats and cars in hangers, leaving pilots to complain that they do not have hanger space to store their aircraft. This led to a discussion of hanger homes.

I have had a long interest in flying helicopters and have only a few hours but can tell you the most amazing thing in the world is being able to hover above the ground as if you are floating in the air. It is truly magical. Today I have with me someone who enjoys this “magical” experience as part of his job.

Captain Ross McClure is a United States Army helicopter pilot and is going to help us understand what it is like to be a carer Army Helicopter pilot. Captain McClure is second in command of the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) Aviation Company. His job includes planning, coordinating, and directing employment of aviation assets to support the Egypt-Israeli peace treaty, civilian observer units and distinguished visitors. His job entails assisting the Unit Commander in the management of logistics, administration and operation of over ninety million dollars in assets and over fifty personnel including aviation aircraft and component repairmen, rotorcraft aviators, flight operations specialists, fuel supply technicians and technical supply specialists.

We discuss:
