The new flight crew member duty and rest requirements published by the FAA is a step in the right direction for pilots flying passengers under Part 121 rules. Pilots not affected by this ruling such as cargo operators, charter, personal, and corporate aviation need tools to combat fatigue.

I recently produced a video to help you recognize and manage fatigue and hope all pilots will review it, especially since the FAA rest requirements are affective two years from now. Remember as pilots we are on our own to combat fatigue. Although the new ruling is a step in the right direction, pilots need to asses their own condition to fly and not fly fatigued.

Strolling along the Skywalk dressed in their Sunday best, the mother in heels and the father wearing a bow tie and properly pressed suit. The young man is holding his father’s hand while straining against his father’s firm grip, his arm outstretched to get as close to the metal railing dividing the bystanders from the elite class below. I wonder who we will see today says the little boy. Maybe a famous movie star.

I could imaging the excitement in the little boy’s mind as he stared in amazement at the sleek and shiny new airplanes. It was an era where traveling by air was romantic, adventuresome, and available for the privileged few. Bystanders at LaGuardia’s Skywalk would spend an afternoon watching planes and their privileged passengers line up and embark on a glorious journey.

As my mind came back into focus I realized I was staring at the cover of the next book I am going to read, “Images of Aviation : LaGuardia Airport”. Another aviation book I had to have and I highly recommend for anyone who is interested in the history of one of Long Island’s most famous airports or wants to relive the golden age of flight.

The book written by the curator of The Cradle Of Aviation Museum, Joshua Stoff, takes the reader on a journey through LaGuardia’s colorful past using historic images. From flying boats to sleek jetliners you will experience the past through Joshua’s prose and the wonderful images throughout.

By reading this book you will learn about the charismatic man this airport was named after to the trials and tribulations of having an airport this close to the city. Having flown to this airport I know next time I land on one of LaGuardia’s runways I will have a new perspective on this busy airport.I highly recommend this book for you or as the perfect gift for the aviation enthusiast in your life.

The Fatigued Pilot : Recognizing and Managing Fatigue

Over the past decade fatigue has been a contributing factor in aircraft accidents and incidents. Of the 1,424 flight crew members responding to a NASA survey of fatigue factors in regional airline operations, 80 percent acknowledged having “nodded off” during a flight at some time.

Pilots are on their own to combat fatigue. With increasingly complex and demanding schedules fatigue is a challenge for all pilots. The following video describes what pilots can do to recognize and reduce fatigue.

Carl interviewed Todd Castro about starting and becoming involved with flying clubs. In error, Len mentioned it would be released as Episode #15a. But as timing would have it, the Flying Clubs Explained audio was released ahead of schedule as Episode #14a. Sorry for the confusion!

Also, for those who haven’t had a chance to check out Len’s new website, ThePilotReport.tv, he has a new internet TV show where delivers aviation news and technology announcements. The show first started as Tea With Lenny C going with the theme of a morning aviation news show. It was apparent to Len, however, that the name didn’t quite suit the format of the show and so it’s been renamed to Today in Aviation Technology. Do check it out!

One of the best ways to decrease the cost of flying and increase your time in the air is to join a flying club. Recently I spoke with Todd Castro, former President of The Blue Sky Aviation Association, one of the most successful flying clubs in the United States.

Todd shared many aspects of starting and running a flying club. In this in depth interview you will learn:

  • Why you should consider joining a flying club.
  • Benefits other than flying you can expect.
  • Various legal structures.

  • Maintenance.
  • Insurance.
  • Unexpected Costs
  • Creatively Financing Aircraft
  • Interviewing Prospective Members.
  • Trouble Members
  • How Member Participation and Volunteerism Reduces Costs.

TAMPA - Do you think cell phone games aren't addictive? Just ask actor Alec Baldwin. He got kicked off an American Airlines plane after he allegedly refused to stop playing the cell phone game "Words With Friends."

So, that got us wondering about the addictive nature of these games, and the subsequent question: if passengers can't put them down and turn off their cell phones during take-off and landing, does that really increase the chances of a plane crash?

One pilot we spoke to did not waste words, saying absolutely yes, our electronic device is a danger to everyone onboard -- so turn it off. (Continue reading at MyFoxTampaBay.com)
