On June 7-9 I will be at the Flight Sim Expo in Orlando FL. Please look for me in the Aviation Careers Podcast blue shirt and come say hi. Even if I am busy interviewing someone please wave and say hello. You can also wait until I am done since most interviews are not very long.

In This Episode We Discuss (Helicopter Careers with Pam Landis):

Industry Update.
Listener Mail:

Hey Carl,

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed listening to all the great information and inspiration on your podcasts! Congrats on your recent 1 million download mark. I’ve been listening to your stuff nonstop for the last couple weeks while at work. I now work construction and am working towards a career as a helicopter pilot.

I have a wife and two young children age 2 and 4. I’m 31 and like many others I am slowly, but surely working towards the first big step of getting my private. It’s stressful and financially tough, as I have saved for a year before starting lessons, and will hopefully have enough to get my first 40-55 hours in.

I feel blessed to live so close to what I think is a great company with an extremely experienced instructor whom I have heard great things about from other pilots I have talked to in the area. We get along well and he tells it to me straight while teaching, which I appreciate. I’m about 12 hours in, and aside from one hard lesson that was slightly discouraging, I’m loving every minute of it!

Sorry for the lengthy email, but on to my question. I have somewhat of an idea of the direction I’d like to head, that is EMS. I know things may change as I get along, evidenced by my curiosity of corporate flying. I've heard interesting things about it while listening to you.

I’m open to getting fixed wing rated eventually, but I feel my true passion is helicopters. I’m wondering how much of the corporate world involves helicopters? Obviously being dual rated would be a huge benefit, but just how much helicopter time do you think there would be? I’m not exactly sure what my path will be after I get my private as finances play a big part, but I know talking to pilots and networking will give me insight and possibly opportunities to go in the right direction. Both ems and corporate flying appeal to me as being home with my family is important.

Thank you so much in advance for reading my email! What your doing is an amazing thing, bringing pilots and ideas together for so many to hear. It’s helped me to realize I’m heading in the right direction by chasing my dream of going to work every day LOVING what I do! Keep up the good work brother!!

Thanks,

ACP219 Flight Sim Expo Evan Reiter

Flight Sim ExpoWelcome to the inspirational, informational, and transparent aviation careers podcast. If you have questions, comments, inspirational stories, or announcements please contact us at feedback@aviationcareerspodcast.com.

Since the new rule requiring an ATP before you can work as an airline pilot, pilots have been trying to find ways to build hours. Some pilots take flying jobs that have no translation to the world of IFR and airline flying.

To regain those critical Instrument flying skills I highly recommend your practicing instrument approaches along with flying in the instrument environment. One recommendation I have is to practice in a simulator to hone your skills before your airline interview and your airline training.

To discuss simulators and the benefits many enthusiasts receive from the use of simulators is Evan Reiter, Co-Founder, Flight Sim Expo. Evan is with the successful Flight Sim Expo for the sim enthusiast and pilot. I think you will find simulators have come a long way and are key to advancing the professional pilot’s career.

Announcements:

At AviationCareersPodcast.com You can find the Scholarships Guide, Career Coaching, and various technical courses online. Don’t forget to sign up for our e-mail newsletter and visit the website for special listener coupons.

In This Episode We Discuss (Flight Sim Expo):

  • Evan’s interest in flying and his career choice.
  • Career connections in flight sim.
  • EMB175 for a regional.
  • Why we are having issues in airline training with basic instrument skills.
  • How simulators can benefit both the hobbyist and the professional pilot.
  • What is Flight Sim Expo.
  • When is the event?
  • How much does it cost to register?
  • Who should you attend the event?
  • What are some of the advances in simulator technology over the past 10 years that have made it more affordable and accurate.
  • Air Traffic control integration to the simulator.
  • Using your simulator to keep current

Sometimes a vital point is lost in the excitement and spectacle of the Sun 'n Fun International Fly-in and Expo, and that's the fact that this entire event is the biggest fundraiser for the most successful aviation education initiative in the nation: the Aerospace Center for Excellence. The money from every exhibitor, from every sponsor, and yes, from every single wristband sold, goes to support this most worthy of charities: the future of aviation in America.

While you're out wandering around in the heat, admiring (or drooling on) the marvelous aircraft and aviation "stuff" out there at the expo, think about how you can go a little further to support the young men and women at ACE, the Aerospace Center for Excellence, and get something tangible in return. Sun 'n Fun offers three upgraded amenities to thank our generous donors and supporters.

First, there's Preferred Airshow Seating, in front of the announcer's stand. For not many dollars, you can do a lot better than standing in the crowd: Preferred Airshow Seating offers seats with a great view of the action, private restrooms, and ice cold water. Inure at the Preferred Airshow Seating window in front of the announcer's stand.

Next, for those in a position to support ACE a bit further, there's the 9/27 Club. Located on the warbird ramp at the flight line, the 9/27 Club offers gourmet chef-prepared breakfast and lunch each day of the Fly-In, with dinner on Wednesday and Saturday. You'll dine in air-conditioned comfort, with a different menu each day, plenty of soft drinks, as well as beer and wine for those so inclined. Your 9/27 Club pass also includes private VIP parking with continual shuttle service to and from the flight line, private restrooms, and tasty treats between meals. Daily and weekly prices are available on the Sun 'n Fun web site at flysnf.org.

Finally, Sun 'n Fun offers its largest individual donors and corporate sponsors the ultimate in luxury at an airshow: The ACE Ambassador Flight Deck. Our Ambassadors enjoy a front row view of the airshow from comfy couches and armchairs in the air-conditioned comfort of a private club, where snacks and beverages are available all day. The Ambassadors can entertain business and personal guests, get private transportation around the grounds, and basically enjoy all the hospitality that Sun 'n Fun can provide to its most significant supporters: the ACE Ambassadors. To become an ACE Ambassador, or for further information, contact Holly Parrish, Sun 'n Fun's Director of Development, through the flysnf.org web site.

You may be thinking "Hey, Carl, isn't it a bit late to take advantage of these amenities tonight?" Well, it's never too late to support such a great cause and such a wonderful program. The Sun 'n Fun website always accepts tax-deductible donations, and when you're thinking about your trip to Sun 'n Fun 2020, you might consider whether an upgraded hospitality amenity and a larger role in supporting the Aerospace Center for Excellence will be in your plans for next year.

Career Expo Lessons LearnedCareer Expo Lessons Learned. Welcome to the inspirational, informational, and transparent aviation careers podcast. If you have questions, comments, inspirational stories, or announcements please contact us at feedback@aviationcareerspodcast.com.

Today we have a special episode where I discuss experiences from this year's career expo and Lessons learned for future expos or career fairs. This years Career Expo was a little different in that they asked potential job and career seekers to pre register for times during the event. This was the same as other years except this year they let anyone enter the expo during Sun N Fun. This led to an interesting dynamic and some very good lessons learned.

This page has changed. We have added Investor Education For Military Families. This is a link to a section of the Investor Protection Trust.

Financial Field Manual: The Personal Finance Guide for Military Families was recently updated on the website and is downloadable as a pdf. I also have a link in the show notes or simply Click on VETS.

Congratulations RD on your job offer from a regional airline at the Career Expo. Even though most employers don’t advertise this fact they will extend a conditional job offer at the expo if they feel you truly shine as an applicant.

In This Episode We Discuss Career Expo Lessons Learned From Sun N Fun 2019:

  • Dress for success.
    • I know they say casual but that does not mean you.
    • You can change during the show into causal cloths after.
    • At least wear business casual if you don’t want to wear a suit.
  • Networking is key.
    • Remember everyone’s name you meet.
    • If you have someone who can introduce you your success is much greater.
    • Walking around with me is not a bad idea since I know many of the recruiters.
  • Prepare for the expo.
    • Follow the stocks.
    • Know who is attending by viewing the website.
    • Know the key players.
    • Know the airlines history.
    • Always remember your actions and words will constantly be evaluated.
  • Bring a one Page resume.
  • Your first impression is most important.
  • Be humble and ask questions.
    • Even if you are a fighter pilot who has not flown for a while you will need to prove you are current and may need to fly for a regional or even a small plane if it has been a long time.
  • Even if you are not qualified for the job ask for help. Most want to give you help if you ask.
  • People hire people
  • The recruiter is trying to figure out if you are going to fit into the culture of the airline and if someone will be able to sit next to you for 4 days flying in all types of weather.
  • Be yourself.
  • Follow up with a simple thank you.
  • Have fun and enjoy life!
