Teaching Skills or Creating Aviators? While reading an aviation magazine I read a statement from the editor that “Flight training is great for teaching skills, but it’s terrible for making pilots”. This started a thought process in my head and made me realize that in many cases he was correct.

Today we discuss how we can better prepare ourselves for the real world of flying while also accepting the fact your pilot certificate is truly a license to learn. Remember a good pilot is always learning.

Surviving Your Initial Airline Training:

First off let me say congratulations if you are listening in preparation for your new job. Preparing for your first training event can be stressful, intimidating and question filled. Hopefully our conversation today will help ease your mind.

Preparing prior at home:

• Talking with your spouse about the time commitment, stress, etc.
• Coming home can be a huge distraction so be aware
• Talking with kids so they understand how long you’ll be gone etc.
• Talking with yourself to mentally prepare
• Make sure your travel arrangements to training are set up

Once you arrive:

• Get to know the facility and your commute
• Get to know your SIM partner and classmates
• How to Study
• What to Study

Once your in the swing of things:

• Set a schedule

We rarely do them and when we do they usually don’t go as planned. Your instructors always told you to be ready for one and be spring loaded to perform one. We hear many accidents and incidents of pilots performing one with no success. What are we talking about? The go around. In this episode we will discuss how you can have a successful go around every time you fly.

What is a successful go-around?

Why go around?

Situations such as air traffic control (ATC) requirements

• unexpected appearance of hazards on the runway
• overtaking another airplane
• wind shear
• wake turbulence
• mechanical failure
• unstable approach

How to make all your go arounds successful.

• Decide early
• Unstabilized approach
• Power and Pitch up.
• Don’t point at the ground.
• Assure airspeed is going up and altitude is not going down.
• Know your airplane. Most planes pitch up but some pitch down when applying power.

Go arounds are a normal maneuver not an emergency.

Why we don’t go around when we should

• Mission driven
• We feel it will reflect negatively upon us as pilots
• Get-there-itis
• Pressure from passengers
• Plane needs to be back at the FBO soon

A Leap Of Faith To Pursue His Dream - Clay Whatley:

Before I introduce our guest let me read an email he sent into the show as a follow up on November 21, 2016.

Hello Carl and Co-hosts!

It was a little over a year ago that I wrote into your show looking for some advice on choosing a flight school that was right for me. You graciously answered my questions on a podcast shortly after.

Using some of the tips and info you and your co-hosts provided me I narrowed my search to a few schools. As fate would have it, my wife and I decided to relocate to Florida for me to attend Polk State College, as it was the best fit of my short list of schools. We saved up for the move and the start of training and made a leap of faith into the sunshine state! I am now a 28 year old going back to college for the third time! I started my Private Pilot Lessons in August and now have just over 23 hours! In fact, I completed my first two solo flights this week! Learning to fly has been an amazing experience so far and I always look forward to the next time I can go flying again! I don't write in to brag; instead I hope to provide inspiration to others who may be where I was just over a year ago, trying to figure out how and where to start.

From the time I wrote in over a year ago to today, I am always trying to do something to take the next step into starting an aviation career: Listening to your podcast and Stuck Mic Avcast, watching YouTube videos, and reading blogs and articles as much as I can. I'll admit that it took some time for my small steps to get some traction, but now the progress is real and it is all flying by (pun intended)! I continue to listen to your podcast and recommend it to anyone I can. Thank you again to all you do for those of us just starting, or trying to start anew with an aviation career.
